Our 2nd son, Isaac, was married on November 22nd.
I had hoped to snap a ton of pictures, but alas, I was so busy that I only had opportunity to snap these measly 5 pictures in the dressing room.

In a month or so I hope to be able to post some of the professional pictures taken by my sister-in-law.

Gun Season

My sons and I do a lot of things together - hunting is one of them.
The first week of gun season brought us an extra nice surprise - SNOW!
It has been many years since we have enjoyed snow during the first week of gun season.

As always... there was a camera nearby and we snapped some pictures.
We laughed at the thought that we might see a deer behind us when we looked at the pictures on the computer.

I LOVE bow hunting!

The reasons are several:
1) The weather is warm and you can wear light clothing
2) The woods are beautiful during bow season (fall colors)
3) The bow hunter sees bucks that are not spooked and/or are in rut
4) The bow hunter gets choice before crazy guns storm the woods

All that being said... I went 0 for 7 this year:
1) Buck directly under tree stand - bow still at bottom of tree
2) Small buck passes by - I choose to wait for monster buck
3) Small buck passes by - I choose to wait for monster buck
4) Monster buck runs in front of me - I stand there like a pillar of salt
5) Shoot at 6pt buck - arrow goes in different direction
6) Play cat and mouse with buck - he never steps in the clear
7) Shoot at 5pt buck - arrow goes in different direction

I LOVE bow hunting and can't wait until next year!
For now... I will become a crazy gun hunter. :o)

There Is A Big One Out There...

I came home early from the office today to spend a couple of hours hunting before dark. I entered the woods about 45 minutes later than I had hoped.

As I began my assent up the mountain I decided to nock an arrow in case I walked up on something. For some reason I never locked my trigger release onto the string...

Half-way up the mountain I heard what sounded like a deer coming through the woods on my right, and for some unknown reason I froze and just stood there and watched a very large (body and rack) buck bound out in front of me and up the trail.

Seeing I nocked an arrow, I should have locked my trigger release on. And when I heard the commotion I should have drawn the bow.

Oh well, there is always tomorrow!

I am thankful for the time and opportunity to take a Florida vacation every year. I am thankful to my brother-in-law and my sister-in-law for sharing their vacation with our family.

The ONLY downside to our vacation this year was the absence of many of our family. I really missed Hannah, Ben, Leah, Aaron, Krystle, Ethan, Isaac and Shaina. I hope that some time in the future we will all be able to vacation together.

Our van ran great over the 2,000 mile trip. I was worried about it because it has 220,000 miles on the engine and transmission. I wonder if it will be possible to take it again next year.

Another worry (besides the van) was two hurricanes - Hanna & Ike.
The ironic thing is that Hannah is my niece and Ike is my son, and neither were able to come with us this year, but there they were churning in the Atlantic threatening our vacation.

As it turned out - neither hurricane bothered us. In fact, of the 9 days that we were in Destin, we had about 3-4 minutes of rain. The days were hot and sunny, but the ocean was not as clear and free of seaweed as we would have liked it. On Wednesday the ocean began to kick up and we enjoyed getting knocked around by the waves. By Thursday & Friday hurricane Ike had churned the Gulf enough that the double red flags were flying and no one was allowed into the water.

The ladies (Shannon and her sister) were pleased because for the first time in our 7 trips to Destin, we ate out every night but two. Normally the ladies take turns cooking through the week and we eat out about twice - this year it was reversed.

This vacation is the highlight of our year because of the TIME we get to spend with the Hartson family. Living 500+ miles from family means that we don't spend much time together. This trip is a great opportunity to spend time with nieces, and of course Shannon enjoys the time with her sister.

There are three things I can no longer do without, especially on a long trip like this one... I could talk to you for hours about the benefits of the following items:

Binea the Baptist Black Bear

Binea, Beth Haven's Baptist Black Bear, was here yesterday!
There is no question that he has grown quite a lot over the summer!

This time I was ready with my digital camera in hand.
The only problem was that the area Binea was in was shadowy, and of course a camera's flash is only good for a few feet. The bear and I were a mere 50 feet from each other, but not close enough for the flash to do any good.

He gave me a great show as he stood on his hind feet, and appeared to be at least 7 feet tall! He then dropped to all fours and started towards me growling and huffing. After a few steps he thought better of it! :o)

I have also included a picture of our dumpster where he tore the corner off (amazing) and fished out a bag of garbage to snack on.

I am trying HARD to "be a man", to be an adult, because I am told that adults drink coffee. It has been suggested that I ditch my MONSTER drinks for coffee. Cheaper and healthier they say.

I have tried drinking coffee all my adult life - I can't stand the bitter taste! Even with 3 packets of RAW sugar and 1/4 cup of half & half... I still have this awful nasty taste in my mouth. Bleeech!

I have just been recruited by 3 pastor friends here in Morgantown to start training for the Baltimore Half Marathon in October.

I am not overly fond of running, but I am interested in dropping 50-60 pounds. I am told that pre-training starts in January. I guess I better go to the gym tomorrow for pre-pre-training!

This is hilarious. I'm sure that those who know me will LAUGH a few pounds off themselves!

After some careful investigation I must admit that my niece, Hannah, was right and I was wrong!

The toddler in the crib that was posted last "Way Back" Wednesday is a picture of Jacob, not of Aaron.

Hannah left a comment telling me I had labeled the picture wrong... I called her on the phone to let her know that SHE was wrong. I was absolutely convinced that it was Aaron. She with all the confidence in the world told me that it was Jacob.

How sad is it that I cannot tell my own children apart?! In the end it was the grain on a door that confirmed the truth. The picture on this blog was cropped. I pulled out the original picture and the grain on the door in the picture matched PERFECTLY the grain on the door in my current office which used to be Jacob's bedroom when he was a toddler.

I was wrong, and here is my white flag of surrender.

My lovely niece Hannah left a comment on the last "Way Back" post. In that post I have a picture that I said was Aaron... my niece says that the picture is Jacob (how would she know?).

I call her at home and she continues to insist that the picture is of Jake. She is confident and there is no wavering or doubt in her voice. She matter-of-factly tells me it is Jake. I argue but to no avail. I call in back-up and my witnesses agreed with Hannah. "It is Jacob" they say, "not Aaron".

I must investigate this further before I concede. If and when I come to the conclusion that it is indeed Jake... I will wave the white flag on this blog.

I, of course, was sorely disappointed that the Pittsburgh Steelers did not beat the New England Patriots. There were a lot of people who thought that Pittsburgh could end New England's perfect season. It didn't happen.

There is a scenario though that I think would be awesome. If the Patriots WIN their next game against the Jets, and the Dolphins LOOSE their next game against the Ravens...

That would set up a December 23rd game between a team who has no losses and team that has no wins! Then... it would be awesome to see a no-win team beat a no-loss team!

Is 23-months to harsh?

Yesterday I was visiting with a couple of pastor friends, and I mentioned that I thought that Michael Vick's 23-month jail sentence for dog fighting (plus) was too harsh. I thought that a 6-month or 1-year punishment might have been more appropriate.

THEN today I learned that the reason the judge gave the sentence that he did was because Vick had not been truthful on several accounts, and had not come completely clean.

My mind went back to to my childhood where I recalled my father telling me that if I "told the truth" I would still get punished for the wrong I had done, but that lying would make the punishment much worse.

Michael... you shouldn't have lied to the judge!
